Dos and Don’t of Septic System Usage

Septic tanks are a real problem. You can be part of the solution.

You may not have realized it, but as a Realtor®, Title Company or Home Inspector, you’re on the frontline of mitigating the effects of septic systems on Brevard’s waterways. With more than 53,000 septic systems in use within the Indian River Lagoon basin, the problem is highly significant – but not unsurmountable. But we need your help now.

Regular inspections (every two to four years*), proper maintenance, and thoughtful usage each help improve the performance of septic systems and reduce pollution of our precious waterways. That’s good for the health of the Indian River Lagoon, which directly impacts Brevard’s appeal in the real estate market.

To avoid potential pitfalls in the home-buying process, it’s best to discuss septic ownership responsibilities with prospective homebuyers as early as possible.

Here’s what we’re asking – please distribute this handout to educate prospective homebuyers and new homeowners about the Dos and Don’ts of Septic System Usage. Even more importantly, we ask that inspection of septic tanks and drain fields be included in the overall home inspection process.

By addressing any issues early in the transaction, financial responsibility can be more easily shared and resolved – rather than delayed, which can make a small problem much worse.

On behalf of Brevard County’s Save Our Indian River Lagoon Program, thank you in advance for your consideration and for participating in this critical effort, which is an essential component of Lagoon restoration.
