Purchase lagoon-friendly fertilizer
How does this action
help our Lagoon?
Every year in Brevard County, thousands of pounds of excess algae-feeding nutrients enter our lagoon from over-fertilizing. The nutrients found in fertilizer contribute to toxin-producing algal blooms, which pose health threats to lagoon wildlife, pets and humans. Be sure to honor the fertilizer ban during our rainy season, Jul 1 – Sep 30, where fertilizer will simply flush off your lawn, into storm drains, and into the lagoon from heavy rains.
If you need to fertilize your lawn the rest of the year, limit the algae-feeding nutrients by honoring the Brevard County ordinance and choose the following:
- Choose 0 Phosphorous. Why? Most Florida soil is rich in Phosphorus. Phosphorus is mined from Florida to fertilize crops in other states. Only add Phosphorus if a soil or plant tissue test shows you need it.
- Choose at least 50% slow-release Nitrogen (unless N=0). Why? Slow-release nitrogen provides nutrients over a longer period of time, meaning less application.
