I pledge to go fertilizer free this summer
How does this action
help our Lagoon?
Florida receives 80 percent of its rainfall during the summer. Heavy rain can wash fertilizer away from your lawn and into storm drains that lead to the lagoon. Thousands of pounds of excess algae-feeding nutrients enter the lagoon watershed from excess fertilizer application. This nutrient pollution causes algal blooms which negatively impact aquatic habitats and the surrounding community.
To help reduce the detrimental effects of excess fertilizer on our waterways, Brevard County implemented a fertilizer ban ordinance during the summer rainy season, which is June 1 – September 30.
