Did You Know?

Septic systems can release pathogens and excess nitrogen which can seep into groundwater, enter the Indian River Lagoon, and encourage the growth of harmful algae blooms. Advanced treatment septic systems provide more treatment of sewage to help protect the health of seagrass, fish and marine life of the Indian River Lagoon.

Frequently Asked Questions

These are septic systems that provide more sewage treatment than a conventional septic system. Through the use of filters, baffles, multiple chambers, special media, aerators and/or the recirculation of wastewater through multiple chambers in the septic tank, advanced systems provide advanced treatment.

The cost to upgrade to an advanced treatment septic system averages $12,000 to $22,000 depending on the type of system chosen and the specifics of your property. Please fill out the contact form and a representative from the Brevard County Natural Resources Management Department will contact you with more information specific to your property.

The process should take 1–3 months. Upgrading requires a permit from the Florida Department of Health, the abandonment of the old septic tank, and the installation of the new system.

The grant is funded by the half-cent Save Our Indian River Lagoon sales tax approved by Brevard County voters in 2016.

Yes! Save Our Indian River Lagoon Trust Funds can be used for sewer connection costs if sewer service is feasible for your property.

The advanced septic systems funded by this grant will reduce nitrogen 50-90% more than conventional septic systems. That means cleaner groundwater flowing to the Indian River Lagoon, fewer algae blooms, and a decrease in fish kills.

Signs of a failing septic system are wastewater backing up in household drains, bright green spongy grass over the drainfield, pooling water or muddy soil around the drainfield, or a foul odor around the tank or drainfield.

Septic tanks should be pumped and inspected every 3-5 years. Time between pumping depends on the type of system, household and tank size and what is flushed down the toilet and drains. Use of a garbage disposal may require more frequent pump-outs.

It depends on whether you choose an advanced drainfield or an advanced tank. Drainfield upgrades are not anticipated to cost more. Advanced treatment tanks with pumps require an Operation and Maintenance permit from the Florida Department of Health and biannual maintenance by a septic contractor. This permit and maintenance requirement typically costs $375 per year.

The cost of upgrading to an advanced treatment septic system varies depending on the specific needs of your property. Save Our Indian River Lagoon Grant Funds are only available for select properties with septic systems that pose a high risk of pollution to our local water bodies. The grant amount varies depending on the level of pollution produced by the property.
